Women’s History Month events that are celebrating women in El Paso

Women’s History Month began in the 1980s when “Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as ‘Women’s History Week.'” according to The lLibrary of Congress website.

2023 Women’s History Month Diamond Award Ceremony

  • What: The 2023 Diamond Award Ceremony will honor the recipients. This year’s Keynote speaker is Ms. Josette Shaughnessy, Vice President of Financial and Administrative Operations.

The Art of the Heart: A Journey Back to Self

  • What: Artist Lizzie Ochoa will guide the audience into creating a piece of art while demonstrating the story telling process.

Women’s Equality and Empowerment Celebration-International Women’s Day 2023

  • What: The event will feature special guest speakers: Ruby Montana, UTEP Humanities Program EPCC Department, The Center Against Sexual and Family Violence and the Association of Women in Community College (AWCC). A donation Drive will support The Center Against Sexual and Family Violence and the EPCC Pantry. Wish list items include clothing, furnishings, childcare necessities, personal care items, cleaning supplies, linens, and food. There will also be a voter registration drive.

Sweet Creativity (Pastry Decorating)

El Paso Museum of Art Women’s History Month events

Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art

  • What: The El Paso Museum of Art will have an exhibit on display through May 14. This exhibit is organized by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
  • “There Is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art examines the representation of Black women over the past two centuries. Featuring more than forty works of art from the Bowdoin College Museum of Art’s collection, the show will confront the history of marginalization and make visible the presence of women of color in the history of American art,” a statement on the El Paso Museum of Art website reads.

The Life and Times of Anita Blair

  • What: A lecture by historian Joseph Longo on the life of Anita Blair. Blair was the first woman elected to the Texas State House of Representatives and first El Pasoan to have a service animal.

Magoffin Home State Historic Site Women’s History Month Events

What They Created- The Women Behind the First El Paso Community Cookbooks

  • What: The Magoffin Home Visitor Center will host a temporary exhibit on women’s roles in creating cookbooks from 1898 to 1949 in El Paso. The exhibit is free to the public.
