Plaza Classic Film Festival returns. See what’s on the schedule including ‘People of the Crossing’ documentary

The Plaza Classic Film Festival will return for year from July 20 until July 20, 2023.

‘People of the Crossing: The Jews of El Paso ‘

The one-hour documentary, by California filmmaker Isaac Artenstein, will make its world premiere during the Plaza Classic Film Festival.

From Plaza Classic Film Festival: “’People of the Crossing’ is a multi-layered portrait of El Paso’s Jewish community as told through family stories that explore the culture, customs, and history of this important gateway between continents, people, and languages.”

Film Premiere:

  • What: World Premiere of ‘People of the Crossing: The Jews of El Paso’
  • When: Sunday, July 23 at 1 p.m.
  • Where: Plaza Theatre Kendle Kidd Performance Hall
  • Cost: $6

Q&A:

  • What: There will be a Q&A with director xxx following the premiere. The Q&A is moderated by Robert Moore, founder of El Paso Matters.
  • When: On stage after the film premiere.

Reception:

  • What: A reception will also follow the premiere.
  • When: Sunday, July 23 from 2:30 – 4 p.m.
  • Where: Community Foundation’s Foundation Room at 333 N. Oregon.
  • Cost: Free

Plaza Classic Film Festival Local Flavor showcase

This year’s Local Flavor will showcase nine films, seven shot and two feature, during the Plaza Classic Film Festival.

The films will be shown during the last day of the festival on Sunday, July 30 at 4 p.m. A free reception will follow in the Foundation Room at 333 N. Oregon.

Featured films:

  • Entre Fronteras (Between Borders) from writer-executive producer and NMSU graduate Julian Nunez. The film screens at 3:30 p.m. on July 29 at the El Paso Museum of Art. Free
  • On Guard: A Story of American Youth: a documentary directed by Allen Otto of Brooklyn, NY. This film screens at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29 at the El Paso Museum of Art. Free

The remaining films will be shown beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 30.

  • The Film Café: by El Paso director Josh Pulido.
  • Liftoff: by director Drew Bierut of Los Angeles.
  • MONAH: by El Pasoan Kim McKean.
  • No Pasa Nada: from Victoria Naranjos Montoya.
  • Platonic: written and directed by Alecs Roman of Juarez.
  • Share for Me: by Los Angeles director Alexander Georges.
  • The Symbiosis of Creativity: a documentary by Las Cruces’ Annie Ersinghaus.

  • What: Local Flavor Showcase and Awards – $1,500 first prize, $1,000 second prize, $750 third prize, with a $250 audience favorite winner.
